PROCEDURE TEXT



PROCEDURE TEXT is a text that explains how something works or text that explains how to use instruction guide / usage.

The purpose of procedural text is to tell the reader how to do or make-something. The information is presented in a logical sequence of events roomates is broken up into small sequenced steps.

General structure of procedure text consists of three parts:
1. Goal (purpose or goal)
2. Materials Needed (material / equipment / materials required)
3. Methods or Steps (Methods / steps)

Generic Features:
1. The use of Simple Present Tense, Often in an imperative form eg Add some salt, prepare it,.
2. The use mainly of temporal conjunction (or numbering to indicate sequence especially in written text)

A. As the sentence introducers (sequencers) especially in spoken text:
  • First ... Firstly ...
  • Second ... Secondly ...
  • Then ... Thirdly ...
  • After that ... Afterwards ...
  • Finally ... Lastly ...
  • E.g. Firstly, prepare some oil!


B. As time introducers, especially in written text
  • ... Before ...
  • After ...
  • When ...
  • While ...
  • ... Until ...
  • During ...
  • E.g. While you are boiling the water, grind the chilies, onions and salt

Example of procedure text:

Ingredients:
  • 1.2 cups of water fresh tea
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 3 pieces of lemon
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • Ice cube

Method:
  • Firstly combine unsweetened tea with sugar.
  • Add the lemon juice and stir.
  • 3 lemon slices and insert the lemon slices into the glass.
  • Lastly crush ice to form small chunks and add to the glass.
  • Serve cold.
